Every year on May 24th, the aviation community pauses to honor a man whose name may not be as widely known as the Wright brothers, but whose contributions were just as critical to the birth of powered flight: Charles Edward Taylor. This day, known as Aviation Maintenance Technician Day, celebrates not only Taylor’s legacy but also the many skilled professionals around the world who keep aircraft safe and airworthy every day.
Who Was Charles Edward Taylor?
Charles Edward Taylor was the mechanical genius behind the Wright brothers’ historic first flight in 1903. While Orville and Wilbur Wright designed the aircraft, and garnered most of the glory, it was Taylor who built the first aircraft engine in just six weeks—a lightweight, 12-horsepower engine that powered the Wright Flyer into history.
Born in 1868, Taylor was a self-taught machinist with an incredible knack for innovation. When the Wright brothers couldn’t find a suitable engine for their aircraft, they turned to Taylor, who worked in their bicycle shop. His ingenuity and craftsmanship laid the foundation for modern aircraft maintenance and engineering.
The Birth of Aviation Maintenance Technician Day
In recognition of Taylor’s pivotal role in aviation history, the U.S. Congress designated May 24th—Taylor’s birthday—as Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Day. This day is now observed across the United States and in many parts of the world to honor the contributions of aviation maintenance professionals.
